Today I've been setting up my new "Sewing Room" a.k.a. "Empty Nest Room" which is really just a valiant attempt to soften the void (My only child just graduated college 5 days ago.) While taking a break and checking into Facebook, I read your blog via Beth’s post. The timeliness of it all is uncanny. As I spent the morning going through old sewing notions from over 23 years ago - I found myself needing to mop myself off the floor as I came across remnants of fabric and baby ribbon I used to make my daughter’s baby quilt, and calico fabric never cut, patterns for little girl dresses never opened… Tears spilling as my fingers rub the raised letters on the little labels I found. the kind a seamstress can sew onto the back of handmade garments, mine saying “Sewn with Love for My Precious Little One” - so very many of them left unused.
These emotions are so painful as they emerge. Five days after her college graduation and I'm mopping myself off the floor because of all the things I never got to. My heart stinging as I find each remnant attached to a very specific point in time. Why so easy to feel bad about what we never got to and so difficult to remember all of our accomplishments. She graduated college for Pete’s sake and I’m feeling guilty over the handmade dresses I never made. Why do I have to remind myself that I did actually did finish the baby quilt with matching canopy for the crib and it was magnificent. I made her first Halloween costume (Raggedy Ann) that looked so real people thought I was carrying around a real doll - and so many more outfits I finished. From the elaborate cakes to the carefully made choices of schools and programs to enroll her in - to the long exhaustive talks about handling life situations and disappointments, instilling values and work ethics, creative experiential vacations and constant monitoring and radar work a good mother needs to do (Even still after college graduation) - I created a life as a single mother for us that was a work of art in and of itself. When I put my art supplies away 22 years ago after giving birth - I stopped painting however I never stopped creating - albeit in a very different way than I ever thought I would.
Thank you for your beautiful post and for the reminder that we do indeed create art from the immediacy of our daily lives. And now, time to sort the dried up paint tubes from the good ones.

PS - And I really have a laundry line - the only one in my neighborhood. Bugged my husband until he installed one for me. And it is, metaphorically speaking, much more significant than just being a place where clothes hang to dry.
